Tim Costello talks up Tax on Channel 7’s Sunrise
World Vision Australia CEO and renowned humanitarian Reverend Tim Costello today threw his support behind the Robin Hood Tax on Channel Seven’s Sunrise.
“If this was just Tim Costello talking, you might say, ‘Oh, bleeding heart.’ But this has the support of [Speaker of the US House of Representatives] Nancy Pelosi and Obama before he was in office,” Reverend Costello said.
“It took 60 years to give $100 billion to developing countries, and we promised another $100 billion at Copenhagen. So this is why there is serious enthusiasm about this idea.
“It has gravitas.”
Reverend Costello was speaking with co-host David Koch on this morning’s Sunrise show on Channel Seven.
He explained that the Robin Hood Tax, launching in Australia this week, is a global push to introduce a tiny tax on banks to raise funds for good works. The tax would be administered by governments and be unlikely to affect the average Australian consumer.
“This is a tax on the Goldman Sachs and Macquarie Banks, not on our banks who do very little in this area, so there is little likelihood it will be passed onto us [the consumers],” Reverend Costello said.
Following the interview, co-host Melissa Doyle asked David Koch whether he thinks the idea will work.
“I think it will,” Koch said. “What’s 500 bucks per million to the likes of Goldman Sachs and Macquarie Bank?”
The Robin Hood Tax will be put to the G20 Summit in June. To find out more, see www.robinhoodtax.org.au
