Perth’s Robin Hood Day: Giant kangaroos and all

PERTH: Under the shadow of the City Bank skyscraper, a gang of Robin Hoods dressed giant kangaroos in green masks and shot arrows into a Robin Hood archery target.

The merry men and women were taking part in Thursday’s global Robin Hood Day of Action. They came together to ask ministers to stand up and be counted by supporting the Robin Hood Tax, a tiny tax on financial speculation by investment banks.

As the campaigners shot rubber-stoppered arrows into their target, featuring the goals of managing poverty and climate change, passers-by stopped to read information draped around the masoct kangaroos’ necks.

The event was part of the the Make Finance Pay week, a global initiative demanding financial institutions take greater responsibility for their actions.

Along with events in Perth and Sydney, merry men gathered around the world in Washington, Paris, London, Glasgow, Berlin, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Saskatoon and St. John’s.
