Thousands expected to march on Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C.: As the Robin Hood campaign gears up for its Global Day of Action, thousands of Americans are expected to march on Washington this week in a showdown against corporate greed.

The crowds will converge on Washington on May 17 in a series of demonstrations to expose the corporate interests – including Wall Street, lobbyists and Congress members – that continue to fight key US reforms.

According to event organizers, Wall Street CEOs alone are spending more than $1.4 million a day fighting Wall Street reform and have hired more than 1,500 lobbyists.

Many of the workers, farmers, clergy and activists set to descend on Washington took part in this month’s week of action across the US to hold Wall Street accountable. Backed by the powerful union group AFL-CIO, the rallies saw more than 10,000 people march on Wall Street banks in San Francisco, Kansas City, Chicago, Charlotte, and on Wall Street.

The Washington protest comes in the same week as the Robin Hood Tax Campaign’s Global Day of Action on May 20.

Events are planned in Germany, France, Belgium, the US, Canada, the UK and, of course, Australia. In Scotland a supporter is set to dress as Robin Hood and ride through Edinburgh on a horse surrounded by merry men, while in the UK a group of Robins will present MPs with an arrow made of supporter photos.

In Australia, Robin Hood campaigners will descend on Sydney CBD at 1pm this Thursday 20 May. More information will be sent to supporters on the day – sign up to the Robin Hood campaign (right-hand side of the home page) to be sent information directly on the day itself.
