Hone Heke tax launched in New Zealand
Amid broad public debate around the formation of the new Mana Party in New Zealand and possibility of a by-election, a financial transaction tax has been given a new name and a new champion. Hone Harawira is the leader of the Mana Party and included financial transaction tax under the name of a “Hone Heke” tax at the party’s launch.
As published in the New Zealand Herald: “Hone Heke was the northern chief who first signed the Treaty of Waitangi but then opposed it, cutting down the Waitangi flagpole on the basis that it didn’t deliver economic payoffs to Maori.”
